Job description

Cory is one of the UK’s leading resource management, recycling, and energy recovery companies. We operate one of the largest energy from waste facilities in the country, located on the banks of the River Thames in London. Using waste that would otherwise have gone to landfill as fuel to generate electricity, the facility generates c.640,000MWh of electricity each year from processing c.800,000 tonnes of waste. With a second facility under construction and expansions in our waste transfer business, you will play a key role in our future success.

We are currently recruiting for a Shift Assistant to be based at our Energy from Waste Facility in Belvedere, Kent.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Acting under the direction of the Shift Team Leader (STL), safely operate the Waste Cranes and Ash Crane and other Mobile Plant.

  • Assisting in shift operations as required by the STL.

  • Continuously monitoring the Waste Bunker and prevent the deposit of any unauthorised waste into the process feed hoppers and report all incidents to Plant Operator / Shift Team Leader.

  • Carrying out the shift-based checks and tasks in the ash expeller area and be responsible for maintaining the area secure, clean, and tidy.

  • Ensure the day-to-day compliance with all aspects of the Environmental Permit, reporting any non-compliance or incident to the STL.

  • Assisting the shift, carrying out routine plant inspections and adjustments / operations as required, collecting, and recording plant data.

  • Working in compliance with the company’s Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental Management System and all relevant legislation.

  • Carrying out first line fault finding and defect rectification in conjunction with the STL and technical staff.

  • Maintaining an accurate log of activities, and events, reporting high level information to the STL.

  • Assisting in incident and accident investigations, as requested by a STL.

  • Carrying out specific duties during emergency situations.

  • Undertaking continuing personal development to enhance knowledge & skills relevant to the role.

  • Carrying out other reasonable tasks and duties as requested by management.

Please note: the role involves working 12-hour shifts covering days and nights including bank holidays.

Job requirements

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following essential knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Previously worked in an industrial environment such as Power, Pharmaceutical, FMCG, Oil & Gas etc.

  • Operational knowledge of vehicles, plant and equipment

  • Communication skills

  • Problem solving skills

  • Be a team player, flexible and self-motivated

It would be desirable to have the following qualifications and experience:

  • Relevant technical ONC / NVQ

  • Health & Safety Training - IOSH Working Safely or equivalent.

  • Experience in EfW plants

  • Maintenance experience

Other Requirements:

  • Must be prepared to work additional hours, a 24hr shift rota, bank holidays and weekends as required

  • Provide shift rota cover to ensure continuous operation of the Energy Recovery Facility

  • Physically fit to be able to carry out general manual handling of tasks

  • A keenness for personal development

  • Valid full driving licence
