Multi-Skilled Operative, Charlton

  • River Logistics
  • Charlton

Enjoy variety in your work and thrive in hands-on roles? Join Cory as a Multi-Skilled Operative and help keep our shipyard operations running smoothly.

Job description

Cory is one of the UK’s leading waste management and recycling companies, operating one of the largest energy-from-waste facilities in the country. Our unique river-based infrastructure on the Thames is central to our operations, and we’re investing over £900 million in our facilities and river assets, including the new Riverside 2 plant currently under construction.

We’re looking for a Multi-Skilled Operative to join our team at Charlton. This role is essential to the day-to-day running of Cory Ship Repair Services, supporting both our own fleet and third-party customers. You’ll be involved in a wide range of tasks, from manual work and operating machinery to assisting with repairs and maintenance. Every day brings new challenges, and your contribution will help ensure our vessels and equipment remain safe, compliant, and operational.

Your responsibilities will include operating plant and machinery such as cranes, forklifts, and cherry pickers, preparing and painting vessels, and assisting welders and mechanical fitters with repairs. You’ll also take part in emergency repairs and salvage work, and play a key role in maintaining compliance with safety and environmental legislation. Flexibility is important – while your base will be Charlton, you may occasionally work at Gravesend to meet business needs.

At Cory, we value safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement. You’ll be encouraged to report hazards proactively and contribute to a positive safety culture. We welcome applicants from all background, so if you’re ready for a varied, hands-on role in a dynamic environment, we’d love to hear from you.

Job requirements

We’re looking for someone who understands the importance of safety and compliance. Awareness of working at height and in confined spaces is essential, along with knowledge of health, safety, environment, and quality standards. Familiarity with regulations such as COSHH, LOLER, and PUWER will be a strong advantage.

Flexibility is key – this role may involve working outside normal hours and at different Cory locations. A valid driving licence is required. Desirable skills include experience in waste management (such as handling waste oils or hazardous materials), marine licensing, and a background in ship repair. IT skills, particularly with Office 365, would also be beneficial.

Above all, we’re looking for someone proactive, adaptable, and willing to learn. If you don’t meet every requirement but believe you can make a positive impact, we encourage you to apply. Cory is committed to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive.
