We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Head of Waste Contracting to join our team. This role is pivotal in developing and delivering Cory’s long-term waste strategy, ensuring an optimal balance of long- and short-term contracts, and securing local authority and commercial waste contracts. The Head of Waste Contracting will lead commercial discussions related to the Emissions Trading Scheme, Carbon Capture and Storage, and support other areas of Cory’s commercial strategy.

Key elements of the role

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and deliver Cory’s long-term waste strategy, supported by market intelligence and empirical evidence

  • Secure local authority and commercial waste contracts to underpin the delivery of the business plan and corporate financing objectives

  • Lead commercial discussions required as part of the transition to the Emissions Trading Scheme and Carbon Capture and Storage

  • Develop and execute strategic waste contracts, both new and re-negotiations

  • Collaborate with customer management and operations teams to ensure a seamless handover of customer contracts and identify re-procurement requirements

  • Develop and execute a business continuity strategy for managing disposal in the event Riverside 1 and 2 are unavailable

  • Manage waste procurement activities, including project planning and development of bid materials

  • Oversight and analysis of data across the entire waste supply chain to optimize the use of key assets and accurately forecast future requirements

  • Convert the business strategy into a dashboard with KPIs and financial outcomes for input into business plans and financial model

  • Develop presentations and other materials for shareholders, lenders, and other sources of finance

  • Identify opportunities to generate additional revenue, lower costs, and improve Cory’s service offering in partnership with the business

Job requirements

The individual we are looking for will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • Proven experience in developing, articulating, and executing commercial strategy.

  • Proven experience in managing and developing a team.

  • Highly financially and numerically literate.

  • Proven success in leading and winning local authority contract tenders or similar formal procurement experience.

  • Proven success in securing commercial contracts on good terms, with waste contract experience highly desirable.

  • Understanding of local government and waste authority drivers, delegated authority, and decision-making.

  • Well-developed waste market knowledge and network, especially in London and Southern England.

  • Understanding of waste operations, including key operational, commercial, legal, and regulatory drivers.

  • Established waste industry and local government/waste authority relationships.
